Once, though, when he was ten and his youngest sister five, she slipped on an icy rock and went skidding into a nearby pond. It wasn't that deep, but she panicked and began drowning. He jumped in to save her and got dragged under along with her. They both would've died if it hadn't been for their Uncle Chander, who pulled Jack out in the nick of time. It was too late for his sister had a weak constitution, though, and died of pneumonia a few days later.
