Name: Yoru Kurai

Age: 17

Sex: Male

Appearance: A lanky, Japanese boy, Yoru has the typical round face, round nose, thick black hair, and dark eyes. He is rather unexceptional in looks, otherwise, standing at an average 5'6" and getting to be somewhat well-muscled. His skin is of the naturally darker variety. He keeps a pair of headphones around his neck, though no one's ever seen him use them, and has a number of tattoos on his body, the main one being a large dragon on his back, but most of the rest being more abstract, tribal design. They are mostly on his torso and back and therefore hidden, but some can be seen on his arms when he wears T-shirts. He has a piercing in his left ear in which he keeps a single gold ring, though where he got it, nobody knows.

Personality: Yoru is a quiet, sullen boy in his teens with trust issues. He tends to be most suspicious of people who are talented, friendly, or in positions of power. He appears to heavily dislike people, but works wit whoever he needs to because he believes in a need for control over these freaks. His idea of morality is starkly black and white, though he has a certain disregard for the law as long as those who hurt others are sufficiently punished and locked away. His favorite hobbies are brooding angstily in a lonely corner and watching anime on his phone. He tends to get lost in his own thoughts and has rather morbid views on humanity as a whole, but finds some enjoyment in the ridiculous and idealized qualities of anime and manga, which he also particularly likes because hearing his native language reminds him of a better time in his life, when he was a kid. He is always serious, rarely smiles, avoids physical contact or displays of affection violently, and tends to respond monosyllabically if he can get away with it and still convey everything he believes needs to be conveyed.

History: Yoru Kurai was born the second of two sons. He was born to the Kyougi's, a Japanese couple who had moved to America in 2008 for the husband's work. Yoru's father, was a renowned researcher, who had received his doctorate in Abstract Physics from Harvard. His mother, on the other hand, was not only a stay-at-home mo but also the daughter and successor of a school of Iaido - a martial arts focusing on the use of the sword. Hikaru Kyougi, Yoru's older brother by eight years, inherited both traits from his parents. The swordsmanship came naturally to him, and his performance in school earned him recognition from his teachers. Despite his accomplishments, he was well-liked and known for being humble, well-spoken, and friendly. By the time he was eight, quiet, solitary, average little Yoru had heard the phrase "when your brother was your age" more times than he could count. His brother was eighteen, and he ten, when it all began to go wrong.

In 2010, Hikaru started to hear voices, and the voices almost always told him one thing: kill.

At first, he hid the impulses and pretended nothing was wrong, but as time went by more changes happened, until even Yoru noticed something was wrong with his brother. People whispered that he was starting to see things that weren't there, talk to something no one else could hear. He had grown quieter, less pleased with everything. It was like he was turning into a different person altogether. His parents, particularly his mother, grew worried, and the tension in the house became unbearable, turning their previously happy home into a solemn battleground. Their parents argued frequently about what to do about him, which only seemed to make things worse. Finally, unable to take the constant fighting anymore and growing more and more afraid of her own son, Yoru's mother left the house. Though she returned after a couple of weeks, it sparked a trend of her running away and returning that continued for almost two years, until they two eventually settled on a divorce.

The day the two of them got the papers, Hikaru gave in to the voices, and murdered them both, and then he set his sights on nearly-thirteen-year-old Yoru, who stole his mother's katana and ran. Friendless and running from his own genius of a brother, Yoru took to the streets, getting by by mugging people and moving from place to place. The strange "Calamity That Wasn't" felt more like a dream compared to the rough realities of living on the streets. He didn't have time for apocalypses when he was trying to survive, and he sure as hell didn't have time for apocalypses that didn't end up happening after all. That's what he had thought when it first happened. But the streets changed once people got used to Powereds, as they were starting to be called. Choosing who to mug became more difficult. Areas where squatters stayed in groups became perilous hubs of supernatural activity.

It was in the midst of this, when he was still only thirteen and just a couple weeks after Jude submerged, that Hikaru found him and, overwhelming him in a fight, broke both his legs. Before he could strike the final blow, however, Yoru gave a great shout, a flash of light darted from his hand, and suddenly his legs were healed, but his brother fell down in agony. In cold blood, Yoru took up his mother's katana and stabbed his brother to death. He remade himself that day, changing his name to Yoru Kurai as the dark night that snuffs out the light, and swearing that he would only fight with his mother's katana from then on. Although no one would have disputed his claims of self-defense, he chose not to go into the foster care system or return to school, and instead continued wandering the streets, this time as a vigilante, responding to cries of help, particularly when it came to lone Powereds.

After helping law enforcement a couple times, Yoru was noticed by PRIT, who offered to clear him of any serious charges if he would work with them to contain problems with Powereds, help maintain the peace, and prevent crimes rather than commit them. He is still rather new to PRIT, and less likely to go on missions because of his age.

Skills/Abilities:

Transfer Healing - Yoru has the ability to transfer wounds between people, so long as he knows what he wants to transfer and where the wound is, and for that area, and that area only, the other person's condition is transferred back. That is to say, he cannot just transfer someone's entire physical state to another person. And when, for instance, he gave his broken legs to his brother, he received in return the bruises and scrapes this brother's legs had endured. It is easiest to transfer wounds between himself and other people in either direction (more difficult to transfer wounds between two other people), and deep wounds or older ones (for instance very old scars) are more difficult to transfer. If, for instance, a bullet or shrapnel is embedded in the flash, he cannot move it, because it is only the wound itself that he can transfer, and in this case, attempting to do so would likely be very painful for the person with the bullet in them, as a fresh wound would be made anew from it. Fatal wounds can be transferred, but he can also actually heal them. If he chooses to do so, he will endure a great deal of pain and get a scar on his back. Because fatal wounds are almost always deep, they are the most difficult to transfer, and directly healing them is the most difficult task of all. He cannot transfer wounds from dead people, and so far the only non-wounds he can transfer are benign, localized cancer, and physical damage such as burns, including sunburns, or radiation poisoning. The easiest and most natural ability is to transfer wounds from himself to others, which he can do regardless of depth or location on the body. There are some indications he may be able to simply directly heal others or also heal diseases, but he hasn't managed those yet, if so.

Iaido - Although lacking his brother's natural talent, Yoru was always more inclined towards physical activity, and picked up the art his mother taught him without much complaint, especially devoting himself to it during the two-three years of his brother's troubles as a way to escape it all. Lack of proper mentors in the last four years has made it difficult to completely keep it up, but he trains on his own so as not to lose his skill in the martial art.

Katana - Iaido is technically a solitary form of martial arts with imaginary opponents, but opponents aren't imaginary as a vigilante on the streets, so he has learned how to use the weapon in actual fights, usually sheathed. When he unsheathes the sword, it's typically a sign of him getting deadly serious. He has cut himself with it a number of times to transfer his wounds as an attack, which for some reason no one ever sees coming. Since he swore he would only use his mother's sword to fight, he carries no other weapons and has turned polishing it into a nervous habit.

Bilingual - Yoru's first language is Japanese, so his English is accented, but he did come over as a kid, so he is fluent in both English and Japanese.
